A few weeks after reports emerged about Deepika Padukone exiting Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s upcoming film Spirit—allegedly due to her request to limit workdays to eight hours—actor Pankaj Tripathi has also spoken out about the need for healthier work boundaries in the film industry.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, Tripathi opened up about his ongoing efforts to set limits at work and learn to say "no" when necessary. “Right now, I’m practicing saying ‘no,’” he shared. “Everyone should know where the boundary is. Once that line is crossed, it’s important to respond with a polite refusal.”
Recalling long, grueling days on set, the acclaimed actor revealed, “I’ve had days stretched to 16–18 hours. I’d say, ‘The actor has left, only the labour is still working.’” He emphasized that such excessive hours are not sustainable, adding that once an actor fulfills their commitment, it’s reasonable to stop. “It’s better to respectfully say, ‘No, this is what we committed to and we’ve done it. Thank you. We’ll continue tomorrow.’”
Tripathi concluded by stressing that setting boundaries is crucial not just in acting, but in all walks of life.
Meanwhile, filmmaker Mani Ratnam has also backed Deepika Padukone amid the backlash surrounding her reported eight-hour workday request. Speaking to News18 Showsha, Ratnam said, “I think it is a rightful demand. I’m glad she’s in a position to ask for it. As a filmmaker, you consider such factors when casting. It’s not unreasonable—it’s necessary. That should be the priority.”
